I met a 9 year old boy in Chicago who was convinced that Africa was really sad and everybody there was dying of hunger. I was furious, not at him but at the society that showed a really skewed version of Mama Africa. We invested on a camera almost immediately and sought out to show how complex and multifaceted we are. We can't just be reduced to starvation and sadness. We ask for consent before taking any photo. It is surprising how many people say no but those that say yes, tell us genuine stories about their life and later ask for prints of their photos. We greatly obliged because of the hope they see in those prints.
