<p>This week in Mogotio Primary was a very busy week. We have so many students in our school, that I cannot cover our whole curriculum in a regular class schedule. So, between scheduled classes (during lunch, recess and after school) I pull groups into the computer room who may have missed our latest specialty.</p><p>This week, I was finally able to associate and socialize with grade 6, 7 and 8. I learned that they were not aware of all our curriculum changes, since they hadn't been to computer lessons in so long. The last TechLit classes they took were from our old curriculum, which was mostly about touch-typing and playing games. Now they are learning many other exciting programs, like Inkscape, LMMS and OpenShot.</p><p>A 6th grade student named Kevin gave me confidence that his class finally appreciates how much they can learn with computers. Kevin wrote a story about TechLit during his introduction to word processing. He explained in a short sentence "TechLit is a good company, because they help us learn how to use computers." (He underlined the word <u>TechLit</u>). Kevin thanked Nelly for bringing computers to their school and for having the heart of sharing.</p>

<p>I was finally able to teach the upper classes in Mogotio Primary this week. They were very appreciative after learning about all our curriculum changes, and learning about all the new programs they can use in classes.</p>

<p>Word document specialty focuses on introducing students to common text formatting options available in word processing apps.</p><p>Joy, a fourth grader in Mogotio primary came in with her project written on a piece of paper. The project was a designed birthday invitation card which she had drawn during their previous class.</p><p>After introducing word documents, she went ahead to do her project. She typed the invitation letter and wrote the subject in bold. Then she used a watermark: ‘birthday.’ She then decorated it and saved her work.</p><p>Everyone in the class was amazed and they were going to joy to consult.she took over the class to teach word document.</p>

<p>Kirwa is a 5th grader. He wants to be an architect like his dad.</p><p>Schools in Kenya are returning from a break. For the rest of the school term, students will be working on projects to practice what they already learned from specialists.</p><p>Kirwa’s first computer class after break was on Wednesday. I told their class to draw a landscape.</p><p>Kirwa’s was excited to draw things around a home. He drew trees, grass and a very wonderful house. He painted the grass and trees green and he painted the house pink with a red roof.</p><p>The class ended too soon. Next time, Kirwa says he will add animals and flowers.</p>

<h2>A Normal Week of Computer Class</h2><p>This week&nbsp;at Mogotio&nbsp;Primary&nbsp;we were&nbsp;dealing with how&nbsp;the kids can save their work. So from Monday&nbsp;to Friday our target was to ensure every&nbsp;kid is able to save their work.</p><h2>A Surprise Visitor</h2><p>On Monday afternoon this week our&nbsp;CEO Nelly Cheboi came into the lab and surprised&nbsp;everyone in the lab. The children&nbsp;were not expecting her! While she was there, Kosi uploaded a video on social.</p><p>I was not aware that Kosi uploaded&nbsp;it onto the computer until one kid by the name Dorah found it. "<strong>Watch kosi talk about&nbsp;techlit on cnn!</strong>"</p><h2>Just Like Us</h2><p>What shocked her is that&nbsp;in that video&nbsp;she saw a Kosi with a uniform like&nbsp;they have. Dorah called me over. "<strong>Teacher kuja! Uone kosi na uniform&nbsp;ya mogotio primary?</strong>" She asked&nbsp;me in kiswahili, "<strong>Kosi alisomea hapa?</strong>"</p><p>"Y<strong>eah! Alisomea hapa</strong>" I told Dorah. All the children jumped from their computer and gathered to Dorah's computer. (They didn't&nbsp;notice that all computers have the video.) They were very happy.</p><p>After watching&nbsp;that video, I told them go and watch on your computer. I told them that every computer has that video.They crashed on their computer&nbsp;by saying in kiswahili "<strong>kumbe kosi alisomea hapa?</strong>"</p>

<h2>Internet Skills Specialty</h2><p>Internet skills is one of the specialties we teach in TechLit Africa. Creating accounts in our local, offline internet program called Social enables students to save and upload their work so that they can always make progress when attending computer class.</p><h2>The Effects of Social</h2><p>Since I started introducing Social accounts in Mogotio Primary and showing them how to open the account they have been showing less interest in it. But from the day I started reviewing Social with them and showing them how they can communicate to their colleagues by chatting they have really developed interest in it. Most of them really enjoy that. Now they are able to save their work and upload it on Social.</p>

<h2>Kevin Recalls Early TechLit</h2><p>This week my story comes from the kid by the name Kevin. Kevin, one of my grade 5 students, shocked me by keeping memories from the day he started to attend the lab. He remembers those days when we had fewer programs at the computers.</p><p>In Kiswahili, he reminded me “<strong>unakumbuka tukiwa tunafanya touch typing kila wakati?</strong> <em>(do you remember when we were doing the touch typing all the time?)</em>" Students used to learn computer basics, then immediately started with Touch-Typing.</p><h2>Games, Basics and Touch-Typing</h2><p>Kevin then compared those days with our new curriculum. "<strong>Siku iyo si kama sai hatuboeki, saa hii kuna programme nyingi sana</strong> <em>(those days are not like nowadays we were boring but nowadays we are lucky to have more program)</em>”. He continued to remind me of the time he could see many teachers, three or four teachers teaching them only SuperTux and Touch-Typing.</p><h2>Learning To Learn with Specialties</h2><p>We had conversations with Kevin for about 5 minutes comparing those days to now. He told me how to now students improve by learning a lot of programs. He explained the benefits of learning video production, music production, graphic design and coding. I was so impressed to hear that even the students notice our improvement.</p>

Social accounts being one of the skills whereby I create accounts for the students using their names as usernames and passwords. <p>Today I had another student attending computer class for the first day. He is a Grade 4, Group B student by the name Kevin.</p><p>When Kevin came to the lab, he was so very talkative. He was so excited to be in computer class that he said he has never seen such a wonderful day like today.</p><p>Kevin said that when he goes home, he will tell his parents all about computer class. Seeing a new student so excited about learning digital skills and so happy to be in school made my day lovely.</p>

TechLit classes in Mogotio Primary serve over 800 students.</p><h2>Mogotio Primary Sets an Example</h2><blockquote>Mogotio is a reference for other schools interested in computer classes.</blockquote><p>Mogotio Primary was the first public school to have TechLit classes. After installing at Mogotio, we used their lab a reference for other schools. To this day, Mogotio allows us to bring guests from schools in Kenya and from organizations abroad to see how classes work in their school.</p><h2>Nelly's Childhood School</h2><blockquote>Nelly's childhood teachers are so proud of what she's brought back to Mogotio.</blockquote><p>15 years ago, our CEO Nelly was a student at Mogotio Primary. The computer classroom we use today was originally Nelly's eighth grade classroom. In fact, some of her childhood teachers still work at the school. Her teachers so proud that she came back and transformed her old school.</p><p>Nelly often talks about her childhood. At that time, she didn't even have the word computer in her vocabulary. Now, students at her childhood school use computers in school every other day.</p><h2>Proud Students at Mogotio Primary</h2><blockquote>Nancy doesn't even want to be a private schooler anymore.</blockquote><p>It's very common in Kenya that parents make extreme sacrifices to choose private school over public school for their children. Naturally, students in public schools often wish they could also attend private schools.</p><p>One day, a fifth grader at Mogotio Primary school explained how she can't wait to show her friend, a private schooler, all the things she learns in TechLit classes. Nancy was so proud to be a Mogotio student that she doesn't even want to be a private schooler anymore.</p>

<p>Mogotio Primary was the first public school to have TechLit classes. To this day, it serves as an example for all the other primary schools in Kenya who want to see the TechLit program firsthand.</p>
