<h2>Graphic Design Class at Chepyuan Primary</h2><p>At Chepyuan Primary, we haven't had any specialty classes yet, because the electrical line feeding the school has been broken for many weeks. Finally, this week, we have Irene Sheey coming to teach Graphic Design with a graphics editor called Inkscape.</p><h2>Class Seven's Favorite Specialty</h2><p>Max is a class seven student. He surprised the class today during Inkscape class.</p><p>When Sheey, their Inkscape teacher, was not around, he was the life of the class.</p><p>He has liked vectors since the first day, because he can make shapes with beautiful different colors.</p><h2>Learning To Learn / Self-Teaching</h2><p>Max was able to draw the coloured shapes and upload for the rest of the school to see.</p><p>Then he figured out (by himself) that he can also draw not only shapes, but also coloured houses.</p><p>He drew a very nice house and coloured it. He was very amazing.</p><h2>Leading His Class</h2><p>Now Max has become a teacher in his class, teaching other students how to draw and make different hings in Inkscape.</p>

Class 7 Student Self-Teaching With Inkscape And Become Class Leader During First Specialty Classes In Chepyuan Primary School

<p>We finally had a specialty educator visit this week. Max, a Class 7 student at Chepyuan Primary found his favorite specialty in Graphic Design. He even taught himself how to draw coloured houses and became a leader in his class.</p>

<h2>Improving Inkscape Classes</h2><p>To make my Inkscape classes better, I've been giving kids options on what they can design. As I was doing intro at Dreams Hills Academy, I gave several options, one of them being a house.</p><h2>Joyline from Dreams Hills Primary</h2><p>There was a grade 2 student Joyline. From the very 1st minute, of their class after I had done the intro, she was trying and struggling to make a house. She kept asking me questions. "How can I make a house?" "How can I paint different parts with different colors?"</p><h2>Enabling Creativity</h2><p>I showed Joyline how to use the fill bucket, which most kids found too difficult. At first,</p><p>she make a sketch of a flower. As she was drawing, it seems she got another idea about how to make her work nice. She deleted everything and designed a house and it's surrounding.</p>

<h2>Learning To Learn with Inkscape</h2><p>Kate Jepchirchir is a third grader in Zawadi Yetu Academy. Today, being their second week using Inkscape, we decided that we are not going to draw shapes, since they're already used to drawing shapes.</p><h2>Creative Inspiration</h2><p>Kate said today that she wanted to make something different with her name and the name of her school. She drew boxes coloured with different colours, and made a star in the middle.</p><h2>Pride and Ownership</h2><p>When writing her name and the name of her school, she didn't know how to type capital letters. When she explained to me that she wanted capital letters, I showed her how it is done, and she re-did it quickly. She was very happy with her own work and the beautiful colors.</p>

<h2>Graphics Editing in Primary School</h2><blockquote>Before specialists came to our school, students were eager to start design practice.</blockquote><p>As a school lead, my job is to help students practice specialties, but not teach specialties myself. But when TechLit began teaching a graphic design specialty, my students and I were too eager to start practicing to wait.</p><p>So today I showed some classes how to open and use Inkscape, the graphics editor we have in our computer classes. I was happy with the results.</p><h2>Creativity and Self-Teaching</h2><blockquote>Faith and Prince taught themselves new skills, and became even more creative!</blockquote><p>Two kids, Faith Jepkorir and Prince Kimutai, managed to do very well with Inkscape. They made shaped, colored the shapes, wrote the shapes' names and also wrote their full names.</p><p>I'm happy with the lessons because Faith and Prince showed themselves how to do things. They discovered that they can write their name and color their name with different colors.</p>

<h2>Introducing Graphic Design</h2><p>As a specialist educator at TechLit, my job is to introduce students to Graphic Design with Inkscape. During my first intro lesson at Barrina Primary, I gave an example of a school logo on one of the kids' sweaters.</p><h2>Exploration and Creativity</h2><p>So today, one of the students came in with an idea that he was going to make one of their own school. Throughout the whole lesson, he was just serious, concentrating, trying to design a logo. He was also the same student that explored stars today and realized that one can get a triangle from a star.</p><h2>Focus and Determination</h2><p>Since he only concentrated on his design he was mean and did not want to show the others, he found it a waste of time. So I had to myself. At least finally he made something. He left saying "<strong>nikirudi next time bado ntaendelea</strong>" <em>(I'll just have to continue when I return.)</em> He saved his work.</p>

<h2>Marsha From Zawadi Yetu</h2><p>Marsha is a grade 3 student in Zawadi Yetu. She liked Inkscape from the first day because she could make shapes with beautiful different colors. She was drawing the coloured shapes and uploading them to share with other students.</p><h2>Learning To Learn</h2><p>She then today asked "<strong>Kwani ni shapes tu peke yake zinaundwa akuna kita ingine?</strong>" <em>(Why is this program only shapes? Can it make something else?)</em> I also had no idea if other things could be made.</p><h2>Trendsetting in Grade 3</h2><p>She then figured out by herself and realized "ooh", I can also draw not only shapes but also a coloured house. She drew very nice coloured house and now she has become the "teacher" in her class teaching others to draw different things in Inkscape.</p>

<p>Esther Wangui, a Grade 3 West student in&nbsp;Mogotio Primary drew a beautiful Christmas tree using various shapes and painted it using different colours in Inkscape.</p><p>She drew a triangle and painted it green, she placed a star on top of the triangle and painted it yellow then used circles of different colours as a decoration.</p><p>She asked for assistance in typing the words in capital letters and I showed her an example. She then wrote her name and the words "Christmas Tree" by herself.</p>
